Friends of Distinction & Zulema - Hey Hey Star. Unlike today’s films, which normally host boring scores and compiled soundtrack lists, most movies in the 70s had their music specifically written for the film. This gave each film a special flavor, built by the artists that were hired to develop the soundscape. Notable examples include Isaac Hayes’ Shaft, Curtis Mayfield’s Superfly, and Willie Hutch’s The Mack. However, this meant that many B-grade films had amazing soundtracks, and today’s selection is one such example. Honeybaby, Honeybaby, for all intents and purposes, is a shoddily put together story of international conspiracy and intrigue. Even leading lady Diana Sands, who first got her start in A Raisin In The Sun, can’t save this film from being unbearable. Fortunately for the world, the soundtrack is actually one to be marvelled at. Written by Michael Tschudin, who would later go on to work with David Bowie, and sung by the Friends of Distinction and Zulema, “Hey Hey Star” is a perfect example of a shining film score. Too bad the film itself just wasn’t there for it.
