Al Wilson - I Won’t Last A Day… I had something else planned tonight, but after hearing of the passing of Al Wilson, it just didn’t seem appropriate for me not to do a tribute. To those unfamiliar with Mr. Wilson, it’s never too late to let him into your lives. Originally brought on by Johnny Rivers (singer of “Secret Agent Man”), Wilson had a semi-successful career on the Northern Soul circuit, giving us rump shakers like “The Snake” as well as easy going joints like “Poor Side of Town.” Despite his success, it would be another 5 years before he would re-emerge and sing his wildly popular arrangement of Johnny Mathis’ “Show and Tell.” Al Wilson encompasses everything that is beautiful and endearing about soul music. Having a naturally flattering voice, Wilson’s presence can instantly make any song more beautiful. Today’s selection “I Won’t Last A Day…” (originally penned by The Carpenters), found on his 1974 hit album La La Peace Song, is my personal favorite of his. The sweeping string arrangements, the soothing soul choirs, and Mr. Wilson’s powerful voice highlight his legacy like none other. Rest in peace, Al, we will never forget you!
